MATHS VIA Kick-off Seminar
2023-10-28
Co-organized by United Prime Educational Publishing and Faculty of Education, CUHK, the VIA Project Kick-off Seminar was held on 28 October 2023. The seminar was aimed at providing information and direction to all participating teachers about the project’s design and planning with a twofold purpose:
- to prepare participants for the initiation of the project; and
- to bring participants together for professional exchange.
Led by Prof. Law and the project team, 20 participants attended the 2-hour seminar. Its primary objective was to put the value of improving student motivation and engagement in mathematics into action through task design. Throughout the seminar, participants learned about the meaning of ‘meaningful learning’.
The seminar served as a platform for teachers to explore different ways of designing tasks aimed at making mathematics meaningful to students. Most importantly, they learned to develop their mindsets to be aimed at making mathematics meaningful by reflecting on the effectiveness of task designs in their previous teaching practices.
At the end of the seminar, teachers discussed and shared their thoughts on the valuable techniques they learned. They appreciated the opportunity to undergo professional growth through group discussion and sharing of their teaching experience.
